Vinyl Flooring Calculator

How much sheet vinyl do you need? The floor area plus 10% often leaves you short, because vinyl is sold off a roll 2m, 3m or 4m wide and you pay for the full width. Enter your room and get the roll width, the length to order and the seams, with the trimming allowance added.

Measure each room at its longest and widest, into doorways and alcoves. For an L-shaped room, enter two rectangles. The calculator adds 10cm to each for trimming.

How Much Vinyl Flooring Do I Need?

The usual sum is the floor area plus 10%. It is often short, because sheet vinyl comes off a roll 2m, 3m or 4m wide, cut to the length you ask for, and you pay for the whole width. A 3.2m × 2.5m room is 8.00 m², so the sum says 8.80 m². With the trimming allowance, the room needs a piece 3m wide and 3.30m long: 9.90 m². In the table below the sum is short in 8 of 8 rooms.

So the question is really which roll width, which way round, and how long. This calculator tries every roll width both ways, keeps the layout with the fewest seams, then the one that buys least, and gives you the length to order.

How the Layout Works

  • Trimming allowance. Online Carpets: add 10cm to the length and the width.
  • Fewest seams first. Online Carpets: plan for the minimum number of seams. Then the least vinyl.
  • Pattern along the roll. Online Carpets: patterns and wood effects run along the length of the roll, so every drop runs the same way. You can fix the direction.
  • Pattern repeat. Each drop after the first can need one repeat more to match at the seam (our rule).

What it does not do: reuse offcuts between rooms, cut round curves, or count adhesive and threshold strips.

Roll Widths, With Sources

Sheet vinyl is sold in 2m, 3m and 4m widths, cut to length. For example, Vanguard Forest, Light Grey Oak (Flooring King) comes in all three, with the length cut to order and the price per m². The trimming, seam and pattern rules are from Online Carpets' vinyl measuring and fitting guide. The pattern repeat allowance is our own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much vinyl flooring do I need?

The usual sum is the floor area plus 10%. But sheet vinyl is sold off a roll 2m, 3m or 4m wide, cut to the length you ask for, and you pay for the full width. A 3.2m × 2.5m room is 8.00 m², so the sum says 8.80 m². With 10cm added for trimming, the room needs a piece 3m wide and 3.30m long, which is 9.90 m². In the table below the sum is short in 8 of 8 rooms.

Which roll width should I choose?

The one that covers the room in one piece if it can, because a seam is the weak point. Online Carpets' guide says to plan for the minimum number of seams. The calculator tries 2m, 3m and 4m both ways round, keeps the fewest seams, then the fewest m². You can fix the width if your range only comes in one.

How much extra should I add for trimming?

Online Carpets says add 10cm to the length and the width, and leave 5 to 7cm spare at each edge when you lay it, then trim to the skirting. The calculator adds 100mm to both.

What if the room is wider than the roll?

You need two or more drops with a seam between them, each as long as the room plus the trim. A 5.0m × 4.2m room needs 2 drops of 3m wide vinyl, 4.30m each, with 1 seam. Patterns and wood effects run along the roll, so every drop runs the same way.

Does a pattern repeat change it?

Yes, if there is a seam. Each extra drop can need up to one pattern repeat more so the pattern lines up. With a 500mm repeat, the 5.0m × 4.2m room goes from 25.80 m² to 27.30 m². That allowance is our rule, the same as for wallpaper. Check the repeat on the product.
