What Data We Collect
Calculator inputs: All calculations run in your browser. We do not store your inputs or results, and we do not send your measurements or results to anyone. The Share button puts your inputs in the web address after the # sign, so whoever opens the link sees the same calculation. Google Analytics records the page address without the part after the # sign.
Analytics: We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how visitors use our site (pages visited, time on site, device type, and which calculator features people use). Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them. Until you choose, and if you decline, Google Analytics runs in a restricted mode that sets no analytics cookies, see Cookies and Consent below.
Each time you use a calculator, print, download a CSV, copy or share the result, or click a merchant link, we send Google Analytics an event. An event carries the event name, the calculator's name and its category. A merchant link click adds the merchant's name, and a share adds whether it used your device's share sheet or copied a link. Two calculators add the option you chose, as a label and nothing else: the concrete calculator sends the project type, and the shed base calculator sends the base type. No other calculator sends anything about what you entered, and none sends measurements, quantities or results.
Merchant links: A merchant link takes you to the merchant's site with a search term in the address. On most pages the term is fixed. On the brick and block calculator it follows whether you chose bricks or blocks, and on the shed base calculator it follows the type of base you chose.
Advertising: We use Google AdSense to display ads. If you accept advertising cookies, Google may personalise ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. If you reject them, you'll still see ads, but they won't be personalised to you.
Cookies and Consent
Your cookie choices for this site are managed by Google's Funding Choices, a certified consent management platform. It shows a consent message to visitors in the UK and EEA and records your choice. Until you make a choice, and if you decline non-essential cookies, Google Analytics and Google AdSense run in a restricted mode with no analytics or advertising cookies set, only aggregated, non-cookie-based measurement Google provides for this purpose.
The categories are:
- Essential: Theme preference (light/dark mode), stored in your browser's localStorage, not a cookie
- Analytics: Google Analytics cookies to measure site usage, set only after you consent
- Advertising: Google AdSense cookies for personalised ads, set only after you consent
You can change your choice at any time using the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page, which reopens Google's consent message. You can also control cookies through your browser settings. If Google's consent message fails to load (for example, if it's blocked by an ad blocker), a simpler fallback banner appears instead so you can still accept or decline non-essential cookies.
Lawful Basis
Analytics and advertising cookies are set only on the basis of your consent, which you give or refuse in the cookie message. The restricted-mode measurement that runs without cookies, before you choose or if you decline, rests on our legitimate interests in counting visits and seeing which calculators are used, so we can keep the site working and improve it.
How Long We Keep Data
Event-level data in Google Analytics is kept for 14 months and then deleted automatically. Aggregated reports, which are not tied to an individual, are not affected by that setting.
Third-Party Services
- Google Analytics: site usage analytics (Google Privacy Policy)
- Google AdSense: display advertising (Google Ad Policy)
- Cloudflare: hosting and CDN (Cloudflare Privacy Policy)
Your Rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold about you. Since we don't collect personal data through our calculators, this primarily relates to analytics data.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.
